Kenneth Scott Benson of Del Norte passed away on January 29, 2017 in Boulder, Colorado after complications with diabetes. Scott was born in Del Norte, Colorado on April 25, 1957 to Harold Lester Benson and Nancy Carolyn Halstead Benson.
“Scotty” was the second child of the four Benson children; with Cynthia being older and Jon and Lisa younger. He grew up helping his Dad work the Benson family farm and was the fourth generation on the family farm, north of Del Norte. His father, Harold Benson (88) still resides there.
Scott attended schools in Del Norte where he graduated from Del Norte High School in 1977. After high school he took classes from Adams State College and also enlisted in the army.
He was especially close to his grandmother, Blanche Benson of Del Norte and helped her a lot with yard work and caring for things she needed until she was 105 years old. He helped his father farming, managing both the livestock and the hay crop. He also worked for many years at Monter Farms in the San Luis Valley harvesting potatoes. In addition, he was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels helping many elderly people in the community for over 10 years. He was a loving, giving person, a spiritual man and had a genuinely kind soul.
Scott had a passion for both music and coin collecting from a very young age. He enjoyed singing in the church choir and listening to the radio, taking many long walks down the lane by the farm, and going for drives in his car. He loved all animals and was especially fond of his cat Elvis. He was interested in people and was friendly and kind to everyone he met.
He is preceded in death by his sister, Cynthia, his mother, Carolyn, his grandmother, Blanche Benson, grandfather Harry Benson of Del Norte, and grandparents Clifford Vincent Halstead and Alice Maurine Simpson of Corpus Christi, Texas.
He attended Pioneer United Church in Del Norte and had great faith and love for the Lord and for his family. He will be lovingly missed by his father, Harold Benson of Del Norte, his brother Jon (Cyndi) Benson of Boulder, Colorado, his sister Lisa (Chuck) Fowler of Ft. Collins, and four nephews, two nieces, and one great niece who live in the Denver area.
Services will be held Saturday, February 4th at 11 a.m. at Pioneer United Presbyterian Church, 630 Spruce St. in Del Norte. Internment will be in Del Norte Cemetery, by Rogers Family Mortuary.
All who knew and loved Scott’s gentle and giving spirit are invited to come.
